What is a broken bone?
A broken bone, or a fracture, is when one of your bones has cracked or snapped. Bones can break in many ways, but don't worry, bones can heal!

Falling down or getting hit can cause a bone to break. When it happens, you might hear a crack, feel pain, and see swelling. Ouch!
Doctors can help by using an x-ray to get a clear look at your bones and figuring out how your bones broke!

Afterwards, doctors can put a cast on your bones to prevent the bones from moving around while they heal! Kids with broken legs can use crutches to walk around easier!
Sometimes, a fracture can be more serious and require a surgery in a hospital. Doctors put you to sleep and fix your bones before you wake up!

When bones heal, they actually become stronger than before!
Just make sure you keep the cast clean and away from water. Some kids even bathe with a plastic bag tied around their cast!

Make sure to tell an adult if your cast is too tight or itchy. Don't be afraid to ask grownups for help!
